At a time when customs barriers are disappearing, it seemed interesting to examine that very artificial border between France and Belgium, which is not based on any natural element like a river or mountain… On both the French and Belgian side, this border area contains continuities of landscape, light, architecture… Over time, around the borderline, a particular space has developed, one that is marked by the the circulation of people and mental projections. Michel Vanden Eeckhoudt’s interest in unsettling, revealing places of this kind inspired the Centre Régional de la Photographie to solicit him. His response, tinged with an ironic and compassionate style, transfigures this investigation of the cross-border reality into a metaphor.
